Abstract

The relationship between sarcopenia and cognitive impairment has not yet been extensively evaluated among the elderly, especially in longitudinal designs. The aim of this study will be to evaluate the relationship between sarcopenia and cognition in two studies. In Study 1, a longitudinal study will be conducted with data from the Brazilian Elderly Fragility (FIBRA) survey, with 549 seniors who participated in baseline collection in 2008 and 2009 and follow-up evaluation after eight years. The objective will be to identify whether the presence of sarcopenia at baseline is a predictive factor for cognitive impairment at follow-up by controlling for confounding variables. The diagnosis of sarcopenia will be performed by the criteria of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP), which will be fed by handgrip strength, gait speed and muscle mass (determined by Lee's formula). Cognitive impairment will be identified by the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Verbal Fluency category animals (VF) and Clock Drawing Test (TDR), which will be the dependent variables. Poisson regression analysis will be used to investigate the unadjusted and adjusted association between cognition and sarcopenia. The adjusted model will be performed to investigate the association between cognition and sarcopenia with the adjustment for possible confounders. Study 2 will have a cross-sectional design as only follow-up data will be used. The objective will be to evaluate, in cross-sectional analysis only with follow-up data, whether there is an association between sarcopenia and structural and functional MRI parameters at rest. The diagnosis of sarcopenia will be performed by the updated EWGSOP2 criteria, which will be fed by SARC-F and the handgrip measurement, characterizing probable sarcopenia. Cognitive impairment will be identified by MMSE, VF and TDR. Regression analyzes and structural equation models will investigate relationships between profile indicators of individuals with probable sarcopenia and structural brain neuroimaging and relationships with cognitive testing and frailty measurement results.
