Abstract

The Neoproterozoic is one of the most critical periods of earth's history, where evolutionary leaps occurred in parallel to strong variations in climate and in the chemistry of the oceans, and in the arrangement of continental landmasses. These processes are usually linked through feedback mechanisms between the biosphere, climate, and tectonics, but several key questions remain on the feedbacks between these different earth systems. In this project we will study the sedimentary rocks of the Nama Group, in Namibia, deposited on a foreland basin during the Ediacaran and Cambrian in the Kalahari Craton. These rocks are key for the understanding of the significant changes ecperienced during this period given their remarkable paleontological, sedimentological and geochemical record. Cassical paleomagnetic techniques will be applied associated to cutting edge analyses, including ciclostratigraphy, microanalyses and magnetic microscopy, which will enable obtaining unprecedented data at very high-resolution. Our goal is to obtain a robust time-frame for the Nama Group that can better constrain in time the geotectonic and evolutionary models for this important period of the earth's history. (AU)
