Translational studies of head and neck cancer in South America and Europe (headspace) / H2020

Abstract

The overall aim of HEADSpAcE is to address the overall problem of (i) late stage at diagnosis, and (ii) the high disease morbidity and mortality associated with head and neck cancer (HNC), with the overall goal to understand and improve early detection and clinical outcome. The overall challenges are to identify (i) reasons for delayed diagnosis in diverse populations, (ii) the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in head and neck cancer in the clinic and in different populations, and (iii) incorporate novel findings related to the genomics of head and neck cancer in disease prognosis. Through the proposal and grant agreement, HEADSpAcE has agreed to put in place a clear and structured communication strategy. The overarching aim of this strategy is to increase the impact of HEADSpAcE via: (1)Extensive dissemination of high quality head and neck cancer research; (2) Development and implementation of guidelines into clinical care pathways; (3) The importance of the Communication Strategy in the work of HEADSpAcE is evidenced by having a WorkPackage dedicated to these activities. However, the Communication Strategy activities underpin all of the WorkPackages, and we recognise that all partners have a role to play in relation to communications. Communication strategy objectives are: (1) to develop the identity of HEADSpAcE and develop a communication strategy based on clear goals, and including targets, tools for dissemination, timing and monitoring; (2) to promote project progress, outcomes and activities to the scientific community, the media, the clinical community, the decision makers, the stakeholders and the general public; (3) to disseminate information and results of HEADSpAcE via the project website, social media and other electronic media; (4) to evaluate the implementation of national and international treatment protocols and guidelines for head and neck cancer in Europe and South America, and develop clinical guidelines based on relevant prognostic information for head and neck cancer; (5) to organize a comprehensive scientific meeting, bringing together leading head and neck cancer scientists from Europe, South America and elsewhere, to showcase the results of HEADSpAcE, and to stimulate further collaborations beyond the timeframe of the project.
