A play of art or the art in play: economic elites and the patron system of the MASP and Pinacoteca

Abstract

Faced with successive interventions of investor groups and entrepreneurs in cultural institutions, this project intends to study the social groups and the narratives they use for interventions by the patrons of the MASP and the directors of the APAC, an organization responsible for the Pinacoteca of the State of São Paulo. Setting off from a framework encompassing both the sociology of the elites and the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, this work seeks to reconstruct the profile of the counselors of both institutions in the period 2006-2020 and thus reconstruct the strategies and justifications used by those in what we understand, initially, as being and intervention of the economic field in the cultural field. In that sense, I intend to make an analysis of multiples correspondence to rebuild the space of the patrons from both institutions and an analysis of discourse, related with the pragmatic sociology of Boltanski, to analyze the justifications used by the agents of such innovation. This research can contribute not only to the approximation of Bourdieu's sociology and Boltanski's sociology but also open new ways for the analysis of a new market of symbolic goods and the proliferation of "managerial" discourses in the cultural médium.
