Abstract

Noncommunicable Chronic Diseases (NCDs) are today a global concern due to economic and public health losses worldwide. Among the NCDs, diabetes mellitus stands out mainly for the high mortality rates, besides to the social and economic repercussions. Within this context, there is a growing demand for foods that can bring health benefits, as much scientific evidence has shown that adopting a healthy diet reduces the risk of developing NCDs, whose etiology is often related to nutritional and metabolic disorders. In addition, vegetable consumption is highly recommended because these foods, besides nourishing, can provide important bioactive compounds for maintaining redox status in the human body, reducing the incidence of NCDs such as type 2 diabetes. Brazil is a country rich in native fruit species with excellent nutritional and therapeutic characteristics. The uvaia (Eugenia pyriformis Cambess) is a native fruit species of the Atlantic Rainforest that, besides presenting excellent nutritional value, has high content of bioactive compounds such as phenolic. However, little information is available in the literature about its functional potential and biological properties. Thus, this project proposes to evaluate the antioxidant capacity and antidiabetic and prebiotic potential of extracts of edible fraction (pulp + peel) and seed from the uvaia, in order to know their biological effects and provide subsidies for future research aimed at elucidating the physiological and molecular mechanisms for the prevention of NCDs.
