Abstract

Considering the lack of researches that emphasize the benefits of friendly relationships in the treatment of severe and persistent suffering, such as eating disorders (EDs), this study aims to understand the senses that young adults diagnosed with anorexia or bulimia attribute to friendship and perceive friends as social support resources and attenuation of psychological suffering, favoring the feeling of belonging. It is an exploratory study, with qualitative approach, following a methodological design (the study?) collective case study and Winnicottian psychoanalysis as a theoretical-conceptual framework. Seven integrants are participating, aged between 18 and 30 years, attendees at the Assistance Group in Eating Disorders (GRATA) at Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto. The instruments used for data collection are: Network Map (for characterization of the personal network, with special emphasis on friendship relations) and interview. From the statement of the guiding question: "Tell me what friendship means to you?", the interview will initially be conducted freely, favoring the associations of the participants. Then a semi-structured interview script will follow, consisting of following themes: history of the onset of ED symptoms and treatments performed; information about the social network, with an emphasis on friendship relationships (meanings attributed to friendship). The interviews will be conducted individually, face to face, and recorded with the authorization of the participants. The recorded audio will be transcribed literally and in full. Subsequently, the data will be submitted to thematic analysis, oriented by the psychoanalytic framework, which is anchored in the researcher's listening and countertransference in relation to the corpus composed by the transcripts of the interviews. Narratives will be elaborated transferential, from which the affective-emotional fields will be identified, dialoguing with the members of the research group and with the converging theories with the assumptions of psychoanalysis. The interview material will be interpreted by approaching the different investigated cases, exposing their convergences and divergences, bringing them together in different fields of affective-emotional meaning according to emotional communications created / found in the material. The results are expected to contribute to elucidating the main aspects of friendship relations and their repercussions on the constitution of subjectivity of people diagnosed with severe and persistent psychological distress, and their possible role as a source of support and protection against health problems. Researches on the repercussions of friendship in the subjectivity of these people can favor the development of new understandings, which invite psychology professionals and their theoretical productions to consider suffering raised by the centrality and symbolic place that the body occupies in contemporary times and its singular implications for the illness process.
