Protected areas are directly related to the availability of water resources. It is known that the process of growth of cities generates a greater population density in urban areas, which has a direct impact on the natural environment. One example is the disorderly land use and occupation, as regions close to water courses, springs, slopes, hilltops and regions above 1,800m, all classified as protected areas. The occupation of these areas compromises water resources, geological stability, biodiversity, soil and even human well-being. In order to try to minimize the environmental impacts in these areas, the Forest Code was established, which underwent several reforms since its first edition in 1965. Despite having a form of protection provided by law, it is noted through the study of the Brazilian Codes Forestry that there is an attempt to make these more flexible, which ends up reducing the areas to be protected. Thus, this research aims to spatialize the protected areas in the upper course of the Jaguari River basin, which has few studies related to the environmental situation of protected areas and it is a region of great importance at the state level, since it is part of one of the main supply systems in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, Cantareira. Through the use of geotechnologies, conflicts of land use and occupation in the region will be characterized, incorporating the discussions related to the current brazilian legislation regarding protected areas.
