Optimization of organic matter removal and power generation in cells to microbial fuels

Abstract

The development of new technologies to meet energy demand and wastewater treatment is becoming increasingly relevant. In view of this, the Microbial fuel cell (CCM) emerges as an alternative to conversion organic matter into electric energy from water treatment Residential However, the power generation to be obtained in CCMs still presents scientific challenges for better technology. So the present study seeks to better understand these challenges to improve and optimize generation of electricity in bioelectrochemical reactors. The study will be carried out with a prototype bench-scale tubular MCC study developed in our research group, applied to synthetic effluent treatment simulating high-load wastewater Organic. Four CCMs (R1, R2, R3 and R4) will be operated under continuous flow, where will be studied in 3 different conditions/phases units R1 and R2 at room temperature, R3 and R4 at 55º C. In phase 2 R3 and R4 will be submitted to a flow rate of 516 mL.d with purpose of evaluating the influence on coumlombian efficiency and CCM potential. At phase 3 the four reactors will be operated with effluent at 10 gDQO.L-1 having their operation characteristics main tained. The evaluation of the treatment efficiency of effluent will be evaluated by analysis of physicochemical parameters. Samples of biofilm adhered to the anode and cathode will be collected at the end of the third phase, where DNA extraction and subsequent sequencing will be performed. So it is expected to get results that contribute to system scaling and increased efficiency in the treatment of wastewater with the consequent generation of bioelectricity. (AU)
