Aging is a multifactorial and continuous phenomenon that, in a general context, causes a reduction in the activity of various systems. Among the systems most affected by aging, it is possible to highlight the immune system. The progressive changes in this system associated with aging, also known as immunosenescence, may increase the vulnerability of old people to several diseases. However, some studies suggest that the regular practice of physical exercise with moderate intensity is able to mitigate some of the deleterious effects of aging on the immune system. In addition, L-glutamine, the most abundant amino acid circulating in the human body, is reported to be able to act on the regulation of both immunological and inflammatory activities. Therefore, this study aims at evaluating the effect of combined physical exercise associated or not with L-glutamine supplementation on the inflammatory profile and response of specific antibodies to the influenza virus vaccine in elderly people. To do so, a group of 80 to 100 practicing elderly people (n = 40-50) or non-practicing (n = 40-50) of a regular program of combined physical exercises (both aerobic and resistance) will be submitted to a vaccine for the influenza virus. On the same day of vaccination, volunteers from each group will be separated into two subgroups and given a 30-day dose of L-glutamine (0.3 g/kg, glutamine subgroup) plus maltodextrin (0.3 g/kg ), or only a maltodextrin dose (0.6 g/kg, placebo subgroup). Blood samples will be collected before and after 30 days of vaccination in order to determine: 1) the concentration of cytokines in the blood serum and in the supernatant of the peripheral blood mononuclear cells culture (PBMC), stimulated or not with the influenza virus or its vaccine; 2) the serum concentration of total antibodies of the IgA, IgM and IgG type against the influenza vaccine, and 3) the plaque reduction neutralization test for the influenza virus.
