Abstract

Brazilian aquaculture production has increased significantly in the last two decades, mainly Tilapia Tilapia breeding. However, outbreaks of bacterial diseases have led to major economic losses; resulting in increased risks and uncertainties about the future of the activity and reduced investment. Given this situation, and the scarcity of effective therapeutic alternatives for the control of disease outbreaks, several antimicrobials are used illegally and inappropriately; resulting in therapeutic inefficacy of available antimicrobials, emergence and dispersion of antimicrobial resistance in fish farming. There are currently only two antibiotics approved for use in Aquaculture in Brazil, oxytetracycline and florfenicol (FFC), and only FFC is approved for the treatment of diseases in Tilapia. Given this scenario, the search for effective therapeutic alternatives for the treatment of bacterial diseases in fish farming is a necessity. Thus, we are going to study the pharmacokinetics (plasma) profile of thiamphenicol (TAP), FFC and florfenicol amine (FFCA) in Nile Tilapia after administration of the combination TAP-FFC; and the therapeutic efficacy of this combination in the treatment of Streptococcosis (caused by Streptococcus spp.) in Nile Tilapia. Streptococcosis is among the main diseases that affect Tilapia production (from fry (10g) to adult (1kg)). Satisfactory results on the therapeutic efficacy of the TAP: FFC combination in the treatment of various bacterial diseases in various species of livestock, including fish, suggest the potential of this combination as a therapeutic alternative for the treatment of bacterial diseases in Nile Tilapia. The results of this research are expected to contribute to the establishment of an effective Streptococcosis treatment protocol using the TAP: FFC combination in Tilapia. (AU)
