Storytellers of Tietê River

Abstract

The project aims to investigate oral narratives between memory and fiction, related to the Tietê river, through registration to be made in field research and literary/poetic analysis. Its purpose is to understand relations between memory, fictional practices/ imagery created by human relations with nature, investigating how it relates to environmental degradation and recovery. The research will meet and analyse oral narratives of local storytellers in two cities crossed by Tietê River, which experienced urbanization transformations in the State of São Paulo: Pirapora do Bom Jesus, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo and one of the most poluted points of Tietê; and Barbosa in the northwest of the State (500km from the capital), in which the river, relatively clean, is still place for fishing and leisure to the population. The project is linked to the research "Revitalization of Rivers in global cities: challenges of São Paulo and international experiences", being conducted by FAPESP post-doc fellow Dr. Victor Uehara Kanashiro (FAPESP 2019/02074-8) at IEA-USP, and supervised by Profº Dr. Pedro Roberto Jacobi, coordinator of FAPESP Thematic Project (2015/03804-9) "Environmental Governance in São Paulo Macrometropolis facing climate variability".
