Abstract

The Pink Sugarcane mealybug Saccharicoccus sacchari (Cockerell, 1895) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is widespread in sugarcane fields around the world. In Brazil, although the Pseudococcid has been occurring at increasing levels of infestation in sugarcane crops from north to south, the economic damage caused by this Pseudococcid is unknown. In the same areas of mealybug occurrence, red rot is common, caused by the fungus Colletotrichum falcatum (Went, 1893) (Glomerellales: Glomerellaceae). The present study aims to develop a life table for the species and analyze its direct and indirect damage to sugarcane. The life table will be developed from the data obtained from the experiment regarding information on fecundity, viability, development, mortality and longevity for each development phase, and total life cycle time. The study of direct damage will be carried out in a greenhouse, analyzing plant development, biometric and technological data. The indirect damage, represented by the mealybug-rot complex, will be studied by the analysis of histological sections that include the food sheaths or flanges, formed by the solidification of S. sacchari saliva around the insertion of their stilettos in the plant, by electron microscopy, to detect the presence of fungal spores or hyphae in these channels. For the quantification of the alimentary sheaths caused in the knot region by the different instars of mealybug development, will be counted apical holes present on the tissue surface. (AU)
