Abstract

Inserted in the study of the shape and functioning of natural languages, more specifically in the field of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) phonology studies, this project focuses on the analysis and understanding of some facts involving phonological phenomena of diphthongation and monotongation. Specifically, in the formation of diphthongs from glide epenthesis [j] in stressed syllables ending in / S / and the reduction to a single vowel of the thirteen decreasing oral diphthongs (V + G) of BP caused by loss of glide. The research methodology will be experimental and the phenomena will be investigated acoustically and perceptually based on corpora consisting of existing BP words and logatomas that are compatible with the BP lexicon, working with the dialectal variety of the state of São Paulo. The aim is to investigate the effects of positional privilege and acoustic dispersion on both phenomena. For this, a modeling based on the Optimality Theory and Harmonic Grammar will be made through the computational tool MaxEnt Grammar Tool. This project is co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Michael Becker (University of Massachusetts Amherst) and is the result of scientific research linked to the FAPESP thematic project "Fronteiras e assimetrias em fonologia e morfologia" (process 2012/17869-7) coordinated by Prof. Dr. Maria Filomena Spatti Sandalo.
