Abstract

Childhood cancer is rare. In developed countries, only about 0.5% of all cancer cases occur in children under 15 years of age. Contrary to what is observed in adults, epithelial tumors (carcinomas) are rare in children and, in this age group, solid tumors are predominantly embryonal. Therefore, it is more appropriate to classify childhood cancers according to histology. Although childhood cancers are rare, research in this area can have a major impact on public health, especially in the potential gain of years or quality of life. However, little is known about the etiology of childhood cancers and, thus, there is a shortage of primary prevention actions. In addition, in Brazil, there is almost no research in this area, despite the high incidence of some of these tumors in our country. In this research project, our aims are: - To investigate maternal and perinatal risk factors for the development of cancer (leukemias and non-CNS embryonal tumors) in children (d5 years of age); - To investigate the role of cytomegalovirus in the development of childhood ALL; - To investigate the role of environmental pollutants in the development of childhood ALL: For this purpose, a case-control study will be carried out, which will be started from the linkage of the database of the Hospital Cancer Registry of Cancer of the state of São Paulo (cases) with the birth rolls database (SEADE Foundation) (controls). After appropriate statistical analysis, we expected that our results (including new findings and the confirmation of some associations already described in the literature) can be converted into information to be disseminated and transformed to benefit the affected population.
