Abstract

The treatment of wastewater contaminated with bivalent heavy metals (copper, cadmium, manganese and zinc) from industrial processes is an alarming problem. The application of nanostructured adsorbents, such as aerogel, can increase the removal efficiency of these metals. To enhance the effect of polymeric aerogel and optimize its properties, the addition of cellulose nanostructures (CNSs) modified with chelating surfactant has been studied to improve compatibility and complexation with contaminants. This project proposes the removal of bivalent heavy metals from contaminated industrial waters by the use of polymeric starch aerogels containing modified amphoteric chelating surfactant (C12-DTPA) CNSs, obtained by combined microwave assisted pretreatments by combined mechanical methods. The aerogels will be obtained by freeze-drying methodology using crosslinking agents, by the formation of trisodium citrate and polyamide-epichlorohydrin (PAE) resin. Pretreated fibers, surfactant-modified and non-surfactant-modified CNSs, and nanocellulose and non-surfaced aerogel will be characterized in terms of their chemical composition, porosity, mechanical properties and their metal adsorption and desorption capacity. Microwave-assisted pretreatments are expected to delignify fiber by assisting the mechanical isolation process of CNSs and surfactant modification to promote better dispersion of CNSs in starch aerogel, enabling the improvement of structural properties of aerogel, aiding also in the adsorption and desorption of heavy metals in waters contaminated by bivalent heavy metals (copper, cadmium, manganese and zinc).
