Abstract

The objective of this study will be to compare the strength of the hip and knee muscles, functional capacity and quality of life between subjects with and without patellofemoral osteoarthritis isolated, in addition, to correlate strongly with a function and quality of life. This will be a cross-sectional study. Participants will be divided in two groups: control group (CG) composed of healthy individuals and group patellofemoral osteoarthritis isolated (GPFOA). Eccentric torque of the hip abductors, hip extensors, hip external rotators, knee extensors and concentric torque of the knee extensors will be evaluated by isokinetic dynamometer Biodex Multi-Joint System 3. Thirty seconds chair stand test, 40m fast-paced walk test, and the stair climb test will be applied to assess functional capacity; the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) will be applied last. Peak torque, total work, and average power will be used in the statistical analysis. The t-test Student for independent samples or the Mann-Whitney test will be used to compare the maximal strength of the hip and the knee, functional capacity by performance in functional testes and scores of WOMAC domains between the groups. Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficient will realize the analysis of the relationship between maximal strength of the hip and knee, WOMAC domains and performance in functional tests. If a correlation between the data is found, a linear regression analysis will be performed to predict the behavior of muscle strength in quality of life and functional performance. The significance level for all tests will be 5% (p d 0.05).
