Considering the difficulties of wound healing inherent to horses, such as the tendency to granulation tissue formation and reaction to foreign bodies, the possibility of using a biocompatible glue in wound suture presents itself as an enriching tool for equine surgery. The tissue adhesive, composed by ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate, when used in human wounds presents properties such as absence of discomfort / pain, reduction in surgical time, reduction in healing time, and physical barrier against environmental infectants, resistance to action of exudates and reduction of dehiscence. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and biocompatibility of ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate as a skin adhesive in equine surgical wounds, comparing it to the use of suture in the healing process. For this purpose, eight horses will be used, divided into two experimental groups, which will have a skin incision performed on both sides of the neck region, sutured with nylon thread (GS; suture group; left side of neck) or glued with ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate (GA; tissue adhesive group; right side of neck). Macroscopic evaluations of the surgical wounds of both groups will be performed immediately after the surgical incision (D0) and at 3 (D3), 7 (D7), 10 (D10) and 15 (D15) days after operation. Aspects such as touch sensitivity, tissue consistency, signs of surgical wound infection, healing process and signs of biomaterial rejection will be observed. After 15 days, a fragment of healed skin will be collected for microscopic evaluation. Thus, it is proposed with this study to comparatively evaluate the efficacy and biocompatibility of ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate as a skin adhesive in equine wounds, expanding the knowledge regarding the use of surgical glues in equine surgeries, providing professionals with a quick and effective alternative to conventional sutures.
