Salmonellosis caused by non-typhoidal Salmonella serovars has been among the most frequently reported foodborne diseases worldwide. Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Infantis (S. Infantis) is a non-specific host serovar, capable of infecting multiple animal reservoirs besides humans. It has been reported among the most common isolated Salmonella serovars in Brazil. Different typing methodologies have been successfully used to subtype S. Infantis strains isolated in this country and other parts of the world. However, despite the great clinical and economical importance of S. Infantis infections, there are no studies regarding the use of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) techniques to subtype large sets of strains isolated from Brazil. The aims of this project are to perform WGS for 149 S. Infantis strains isolated from humans (n=30), food (n=43), animals (n=33) and the environment (n=43) in Brazil between 2013 and 2018; to characterize these strains by the Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) analysis and core genome Multilocus Sequencing Type (cgMLST); and search for the presence of virulence and resistance genes. During the training period proposed, WGS will be performed under the supervision of Dr. Marc W. Allard at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and genome assembly, annotation and genomic analysis will be performed under the supervision of Assistant Prof. Dr. Abigail B. Snyder at the Cornell University. These results will contribute to a better characterization of the circulating S. Infantis strains in Brazil in recent years, and will help to elucidate genotypic characteristics related to different virulence and antimicrobial resistance profiles that could lead to a better understanding of the infection and diseases caused by this serovar of great clinical importance in this country.
