Abstract

This postdoctoral project aims i) to understand to what extent the physical and geographical aspects that conditioned the expansion and urban layout, specifically in the São Paulo city; ii) to establish a research model for studies about the expansion and morphology of other cities. The object of study presents the city of São Paulo as the spatial approach, considered our case, and the temporal approach corresponds to the second half of the nineteenth century, a moment of significant urban growth and spatial configuration of the city that reverberates in the twentieth. The methodological approach is the GIS-Historical, the intersection of varied historical information (parish land records, metropolitan curia records, economic data, historical cartography, etc.) and geographical (satellite images for relief analysis and other spatial data) in specific geotechnology software, preferably free technologies, part of the broad movement of the digital humanities. Because of this, the theoretical contribution is twofold: one part is related to computer science, graph theory, and the other is historical and geographical, specifically geohistory. This research aims to be part of and articulate with the "Pauliceia 2.0: The Spatiotemporal Platform for digital humanities" project, (Process No. 2016/04846-0) approved by the FAPESP eScience Program, which is developed by a broad network of researchers from the National Institute of Space Research (INPE), Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), Public Archive of the State of São Paulo (APESP) and Emory University (EU).
