Abstract

Obesity is directly involved in the etiology of noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs). Excessive ingestion of nutrients associated with obesity culminates in the activation of pro-inflammatory signaling pathways and stress responses in different parts of the body, resulting in low-intensity chronic inflammation. The blood orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) is rich in flavanones and anthocyanins, that in vitro and in vivo, presented a potential beneficial role in reducing the risk of NCDs, may modulate epigenetic mechanisms as microRNA expression. However, the bioactivity of the absorbed phytochemicals depends on how they are metabolized during absorption. Objective: To identification and dosage the metabolites phase-2 of bioactive compounds of blood orange juice in the plasma of overweight women. Methods: This project be part of the project of PhD student Vinícius Cooper Capetini, entitled ''Chronic effect of blood orange juice intake on microRNA expression profile and inflammatory response in overweight women''. An intervention study was performed with adults women (n = 20), diagnosed as being overweight. For four weeks, volunteers ingested 500 mL of blood orange juice (variety Moro) daily with baseline blood sampling and 2 and 4 weeks after the start of the experimental protocol. From plasma will be analyzed bioactive compounds metabolites at the Quadram Institute. The quantification of flavanones and anthocyanins metabolites phase-2 will be done by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). (AU)
