Abstract

For political-ideological reasons, the perspective of women and gender studies in the study of History has acquired great relevance, using considerable perspectives to understand the role of minorities in History. However, within the gender perspective, little progress has been made in demonstrating male attributions, historically and sociologically constructed. The present work has as objective to investigate the man inside the psychiatric institutions in the brazilian republican period, this period that under the bulge of the modernization, carried with it a strong hygienist motivation, removing the undesirable elements of the modern, orderly and clean city that ascended. It is necessary to investigate whether, just as women who did not conform to the feminine ideal were collected, it happened to men who diverged from the attributions of masculinity the same fate, that is, the recollection for psychiatric institutions under the pretext of mental alienation.
