Associated to the scholarship:18/25739-2 - The harmonics of Claudius Ptolemy: introductory study and translation of the book I, BP.IC

The present project is part of a research being developed in Brazil on the Harmonics of Claudius Ptolemy, with the aim to translate the first book of this treatise. The study of harmony was very important as a science in Ancient Greece throughout many centuries. The referred project justifies itself - besides the importance of Ptolemy's text itself - by the fact that there is no previous known translation into Portuguese. However, a fundamental part of the bibliography necessary for such a translation is not available in Brazil and cannot be purchased on the internet. Thus, this project has the intention of requesting a period of research abroad to collect the referred books (editions of Greek texts) and to investigate further the secondary bibliography necessary for the translation. The research centre chosen is the University of Oxford because, aside from its prestige among the great universities in Europe, its libraries have all the necessary books. (AU)
