Abstract

A fluidized bed is basically a suspension of solid particles (granular matter) in a vertical tube by an ascendant gas or liquid flow. Given their high heat and mass transfers, fluidized beds are frequently employed in industry, in processes such as biomass gaseification, combustion of coal and coating of solids. Uniform fluidized beds are rarely encountered in industrial applications and instabilities, such as transverse waves, bubbles and long bubbles, usually appear. This project is devoted to experiments of a granular bed fluidized by a liquid. Different beds will be fluidized in a transparent tube, and the motion of individual grains as well as the formation of patterns will be recorded with regular and high-speed cameras. The acquired images will be post-processed with in-house numerical scripts in order to obtain the characteristic lengths and velocities of bed structures. (AU)
