Abstract

Arboviruses are transmitted by several Diptera hematophagous arthropod vectors, such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. They are found in tropical areas where the climatic conditions support the maintenance of vectors. Two arbovirus families are highlighted for their impact on public health: Togaviridae, represented by Chikungunya (CHIKV), Mayaro (MAYV), and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEEV) viruses; and the Flaviviridae family, with Dengue (DENV), Yellow Fever (YFV) and Zika (ZIKV) viruses. In Brazil, there has been an increase in the incidence of these arboviruses in recent years. The outbreak of ZIKV infections has been associated with increased cases of microcephaly and other neurological disorders in the country and worldwide, and it is considered an international public health problem. DENV and CHIKV are arboviruses that presents a recent emergence as the cause of neurological manifestations, and they are associated with Guillain-Barré Syndrome and transverse myelitis. Therefore, this project consists on retrospective evaluation of the incidence of arboviruses as neurotropic agents in cerebrospinal fluid samples from patients with neurological symptoms compatible with viral meningo-encephalitis, flaccid paralysis, transverse myelitis and Guillain-Barré Syndrome, in order to establish a correlation between clinical and virological diagnosis with morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, it will provide important informations for the construction of differential diagnosis and for the establishment of profiles of the etiological agents associated with central and peripheral disorders of nervous system.
