Abstract

Searching for optimization and automation of manufacturing processes has being a trend in the metal-mechanics industry for a long time. Nowadays, it has been even more essential due to economic, social and environmental requirements inside a sustainability scope. Machining operations implicate typically a complex relation between high process times and costs so that a manufacturing engineer must be aware to all the input variables over them. In this project, a correlation study between tool wear evolution, tool vibration, and electrical power demand is proposed for medium-carbon steel turning, so that it may be possible to develop a model capable of determining tool life in a more efficient and effective way than traditional models that are usually applied. Input variables will be parameters as cutting speed, feed and depth of cut tested and replicated at several levels using the Taguchi methodology. Tool vibration will be evaluated in terms of amplitude and frequency. Addition this project, a correlation study between tool wear evolution, tool vibration and electrical power demand is proposed for medium-carbon steel turning, so that it may be possible to develop a model capable on determining tool life in a more efficient and effective way than traditional models that are usually applied orally, the CNC lathe power demand will be observed. Analysis of variance techniques will be employed in order to alloy a better results discussion. (AU)
