Abstract

In Brazil, studies of the diversity and abundance of Mesostigmata predatory mites in the soil are incipient. Understanding the biodiversity of these organisms is an important aspect for the discovery of new species that have potential for use in biological control. In addition, it is important to verify the influence of crop management on the diversity of these organisms. Thus, the present study aims to survey the diversity of Mesostigmata mites, with emphasis on Gamasina, in conventional and organic sugarcane crops in the state of São Paulo for to compare the diversity and abundance of these organisms in these systems. For this, soil samples of four areas will be collected every two months for six months in sugarcane. Two areas with conventional system and two with organic system. In each area 16 random sampling points will be chosen. In the laboratory, the collected soil samples will be immediately placed in the modified Berlese-Tullgren equipment for mite extraction. The extracted material will be sorted and the Gamasina mites will be mounted on slides with Hoyer medium. These specimens will be grouped into morphospecies and identified to species level when possible. The mites obtained in this study will be deposited in the Insect and Mite Reference Collection of the Plant Protection Department of FCAV/UNESP and the Mite Reference Collection of Acarology Laboratory of the ESALQ/USP. In addition, the data of the identified species will be entered into the information system of the BIOTA-FAPESP program.
