Metabolomic study of Brazilian plants used in the treatment of chronic diseases

Abstract

Peptic ulcer is a common disease found to be prevalent worldwide, and which affects a large number of people. Continued use of drugs in anti-ulcer therapy often produces several side effects. The present project has been designed as part of the efforts to develop an efficient treatment capable of ensuring essentially more effective pharmacological effects to patients who are faced with the need to continue using drugs for therapeutic purposes. The project aims to employ the metabolomic approach as a necessary tool for quality control and authentication of Byrsonima intermedia, Serjania marginata and Terminalia catappa extracts/phytopreparations, which will be used for the treatment of chronic diseases. With regard to the execution of the project, the quality control of the species investigated will be evaluated using advanced analytical techniques [UHPLC-DAD-(ESI)-HRMS and RMN], multivariate statistical analyses, and the integration of orthogonal biological approaches; these techniques will be used to assess a set of chemical compositions and environmental variables, and to better understand the effects of metabolites with anti-inflammatory activity in B. Intermedia, S. marginata and T. catappa plant extracts. The metabolomic approach is employed aiming at ensuring a more selective, fast and efficient analysis of the chemical compositions of B. intermedia, S. marginata and T. catappa species. (AU)
