Abstract Portraits of heroes occupy a privileged place in national iconographies. In Brazil, the Republic led to the emergence of leaders who fought for Independence, but who remained overshadowed by the image of the king. Such incorporation, despite privileging male and elite characters, also allowed women and "figures of the people" to make up the national galleries. This research aims to understand the role played by the representations of the female soldier Maria Quitéria de Jesus in the formation of the Brazilian republican imaginary. (AU) | |
