Abstract

This project aims to interpret representations of Afro-Brazilian religions (candomblé, umbanda and others) in contemporary filmography (documentary and fiction films), considering the significant presence of elements or references of these religions in this art. The research proposes a survey of the cinematographic works that somehow focused on the universe of Afro-Brazilian religions by analyzing the sociocultural context of their production, recurrent themes and approaches, their importance in the definition of "national aesthetics" and a pattern of consumption of cultural goods (defining the people-of-santo lifestyle) and its implications in terms of enhancing (or not) Afro-Brazilian religious legacies in the religious field and elsewhere. The reference period for the analysis of the films is from 1980 to 2019. (AU)
