Abstract

The senescence is a tumoral suppression mechanism, where tumoral cells are unable to proliferate and are easily eliminated by immune system. Nowadays the induction of senescence by therapy represents a new functional target that may improve the therapy against cancer. Also, the Ganoderma lucidum (GL) edible mushroom has been widely used since ancient times as an auxiliary tool in human life longevity and human diseases treatment, including cancer. GL extracts have different functions on tumour lineages, acting in different ways due to specific components such as polysaccharides, capable of acting mainly on inflammatory and antitumor responses. Among the many types of cancer, head and neck carcinoma surpass. It's considered a major public health problem and is widely studied, since it presents high rates of recurrence and metastasis with several mechanisms of defense against radiotherapy and chemotherapy, causing failure in conventional treatments. Thus, once the senescence induced by therapy may promotes tumor regression, GL polysaccharides show antitumor effects and head and neck carcinoma may show considerable failure rates in their treatment, it is proposed to evaluate the ability senescence induction of GL mushroom polysaccharides on tongue squamous carcinoma cell.
