US-Brazil technical cooperation in Brazilian countryside: the operation of Agricultural and natural Resources Division (ANR) in structuring of rural associations of credit and extension from 1954 to 1958

Abstract

Although the United States did not make a significant contribution of economic aid to post-World War II Latin America, made it of technical cooperation the means of assisting underdeveloped countries to modernize, creating higher stability and security in the face of communism. Therefore, this research project aims to understand the structuring of the Supervised Credit and Rural Extension Associations in Brazil from US technical assistance programs between 1954 and 1958. Our analysis will begin with the diffusion of regional credit associations in Brazil in 1954, until the consolidation of the Brazilian Association of Rural Credit and Assistance (ABCAR) in 1958, focusing on the actions of the American Technical Cooperation Mission in Brazil (USOM/Brazil), more specifically the perspectives and actions of its agricultural arm (ANR).
