Understanding the patterns and processes involved in the origin and maintenance of biological diversity is a key question in biology. A variety of factors, including history and ecology, have influenced population divergence in the past leading to speciation. However, we still do not have a clear understanding of the relative importance of those factors for the diversification of most lineages. This project focuses on Cuspidaria Dc., a clade with ca. 21 species of Neotropical lianas broadly distributed through dry and wet forests, wetlands, and Cerrados. The contrasting distribution patterns of species within the genus make this group an excellent model to study the relative role of history, geography, and ecology for species diversification in the Neotropics. This project aims to: (i) reconstruct the phylogeny of Cuspidaria; (ii) prepare a monograph of the genus; and (iii) use the phylogeny as basis to investigate the role of history, geography and ecology for the diversification of this group.
