Influence of high-power laser irradiation on the physical-chemical and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V disks

Abstract

The diverse proposals of surface treatment for dental implants promoted the development of the implantology and a high index of success of this therapy. The high-power laser can modify titanium surfaces creating a complex topography with micro- and nano-scaled patterns, as well as a layer of oxide that can improve osseointegration. However, due to its recent use for this purpose, its effects on the properties of the surfaces of titanium and its alloys are still controversial. Thus, the objective of the present study will be to evaluate the influence of the high power laser on the physical-chemical and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V disks machined and with surface treatment by hydroxyapatite (HA) coating. 40 titanium discs (Ti-6Al-4V) will be used (n = 10) (Ø 8mm × 3mm thickness): G1 - machined polished without irradiation; G2 - machined polished with irradiation; G3 - treated with HA coating without irradiation; G4 - treated with HA coating with irradiation. In all the groups will be performed out analyzes of the topography and chemical composition by Scanning Electron Microscopy (EDS) and X-ray Dispersive Energy Spectroscopy (EDS), changes in wettability through a goniometer and surface roughness using a Confocal Microscope the Laser. The results obtained will be submitted to parametric or non-parametric tests according to the data distribution (±=0.05).
