Increased yields in crops have shown an inverse relation with nutritional content in the edible parts of crops. It is estimated that one-fifth of the world's population suffers from Zn deficiency. On the other hand, the low natural content of Se in the soils and its antagonism with the sulfur (S) entails foods with very low amounts of Se. The objective of this project is to evaluate the Zn effect on yield and nutritional quality of cowpea genotypes, as well as the relation of Se and S on the uptake and accumulation in cowpea plants under field conditions. Two experiments will be conducted. Experiment 1: an experiment will be carried out to characterize the uptake and accumulation efficiency of Zn in the grains of different cowpea genotypes. In this experiment, 29 cowpea genotypes were evaluated in the presence and absence of Zn (0 and 10 kg ha-1), with 3 replicates, cultivated until the end of cycle to obtain the grains. Experiment 2: in order to evaluate the interaction between Se and S, a field experiment will be performed applying the combination of four rates of Se as sodium selenate (0; 10; 25 and 50 g Se ha-1) and four doses of S in ammonium sulphate (0, 15, 30 and 60 kg S ha-1). At the end of Experiments 1 and 2, the following will be evaluated: macro and micronutrients content including Se, total amino acid content, protein, and sugars in cowpea seeds. The understanding of the factors involved in the genotype variation regarding the accumulation of Zn and the interaction between Se and S applied in the field may provide subsidies for later use of this information in plant breeding, fertilization and in the production of foods of better nutritional quality aiming at a higher concentration of Zn and Se in the grains.
