Lithium-sulfur batteries: development of new generation of positive electrodes based on composites of MOFs/sulfur

Abstract

Growing concerns about the energy crisis due to the depletion of fossil fuels, as well as global warming caused by the increasing level of atmospheric CO2, stimulated the development and the insertion of new technologies involving renewable sources for the energy matrix diversification, which is one of the world trends topics. Batteries are widely used for stored the generated energy, especially the lithium-sulfur batteries, since the high theoretical capacity, high energy density of sulfur, besides being abundant and low cost. To Li-S development some challenges need to be overcome as he "shuttle" effect caused by the dissolution of formed polysufides, the expansion after lithiation and the insulating property of sulfur. The sulfur encapsulation in pores of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOF's) shows a promising path. Thus, the proposal of this plan-work is the development of electroactive materials based on MOF's and sulfur for the Li-S cells application. The compounds will be characterized by physical chemistry techniques for structure analysis, as well as electrochemically tested as positive electrodes in Li-S batteries aiming to increase the durability and capacity storage of Li-S batteries.
