Impact of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean on cut-off LOWS: analysis of their variability, structure and lifecycle using climate models simulations

Abstract

It is unquestionable that large-scale changes are driven by oceanic variability. The Atlantic Ocean in particular is of great importance to the global climate change. In order to improve our understanding of the ocean-atmosphere interaction, the aim of this study is to investigate the possible effect of the local variations in the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean on the Cut-off Lows (COLs). In addition, we intend to know how climate change may change the behavior of COLs in the future. To answer these questions, simulations will be made using the state-of-the-art climate models: the more recent outputs from the CMIP6 models. This study will allow us to determine the potentialities and limitations of climate models. Simulations with the RegCM4 regional model will be carried out to investigate the impact of the Atlantic SST changes on the COLs. Thus, this study intends to expand the discussion about the subject that has been examined by several investigators under the thematic project SAMBAR, sponsored by FAPESP. (AU)
