Introduction: Population aging has been shown in evidence. We highlight improvements and investments in programs to support the elderly and their families, in the social and health areas. Some programs, projects and services gain evidence of care and provide support and assistance to families and the elderly in need of care through comprehensive institutional care. Long-term care institutions for the elderly, also known as asylums, shelters or rest homes, are highlighted. Objective: To verify the reason for the applications of vacancies in the Long-term care institutions for the elderly in two cities São Carlos and Araraquara, São Paulo state.
