Abstract

Thermochemical biomass conversion technologies allow its use in a variety of processes ranging from heat and electricity production to fuels. The technological development achieved with such technologies enable developed countries can achieve the specified goals in order to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. Although some products obtained by thermochemical processes (pyrolysis, gasification, combustion, among others) have a lower energy content when compared to petroleum derivatives, they present absence of nitrogen compounds, lower amounts of sulfur and ash, resulting in lower emission combustion products (SO2, NOx and particulate matter) thus causing less negative impact on the environment. Specifically, for pyrolysis technology, this is an efficient biomass conversion process that takes place at high temperatures and in the absence of oxygen or in small quantities of an oxidizing agent. In this context, to have a better understanding about the factors that influence the yields and characteristics of the products obtained through this process, it is essential to study the operational parameters such as peak temperature and heating rate to facilitate large scale industrialization, which are the main objectives of this work.
