Abstract

Nanodiamonds (NDs) are carbon-based materials which are amongst the promising new materials for biomedical applications. Due to their high colloidal stability in aqueous media and biocompatibility, NDs can be used as a drug carrier, bio imaging agents or implant coatings. Their application has also been extended to electronics and optical materials since NDs have high thermal conductivity, fluorescence, electronic resistivity and chemical stability. Several researchers have proven that NDs hold high antimicrobial activity but these works have also highlighted the critical role of surface chemistry to this activity. Therefore, several methods have been developed in order to functionalize NDs surface. This project aims at obtaining NDs functionalized with carboxylic acid in order to enhance the antimicrobial activity as well as to enable further functionalization with the most diverse number of chemical groups. NDs suspension will be prepared by submitting CVD diamond to ultrasound treatment. Then, the NDs will be hydrogenated by treatment with hydrogen plasma. Following, NDs will be functionalized with carboxylic acid by a photochemical method which requires unsaturated carboxylic acids and UV irradiation. Finally, the antimicrobial activity will be evaluated against S. aureus, E. coli and C. albicans.
