Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is produced during the process of asphalt pavements maintenance and/or reconstruction, and it is the principal waste generated by the highway construction sector. Nowadays, the reuse of RAP during the construction of new pavements is a practice widely applied throughout the world, especially in developed countries. Only limited application of RAP have been aplied in Brazil despite the advantages as: reduction of non-renewable natural resources exploration and cost; and also reduction on the high amount of residue generated by transportation sector dumped into the environment.When this cycle of deterioration/milling/recycling is repeated for the same asphalt pavement, occours the process known as multi-recycling where the materials of the first generation are reused more than once. Taking into account this process, the performance of the material subjected to repeated cycles should be well evaluated, verifying if its properties are maintained after a certain degree of aging. This research proposal is part of a project that aims to evaluate the rheological and chemical properties of binders and its correlation with mechanical properties of the asphalt mixture, taken into account the interaction of the new and aged binder during recycling processes. Analyses should envolve methods based in the chemistry and rheology of the material to quantify the interaction between asphaltic binders in the recycling process, and also the use of biotechnology to improve the processes, or even to replace the asphalt binder by biobinders of vegetal nature. With all the topics included in the project as a whole, this research proposal aims to evaluate the practices of multiple recycling of asphalt pavements taking into account all the variables mentioned above.
