Mental Disorders (MDs) are characterized by alterations in the functioning of the CNS, and these psychiatric conditions have attracted the attention of researchers from diverse areas due to the high prevalence and the highly debilitating clinical characteristics. Unlike most of the known organic diseases, the diagnosis for MDs still essentially based on clinical interviews, which can often lead to inaccurate diagnosis, as there are many similarities, especially in the symptoms, among the many well-known MDs. In order to better understand the biochemical and/or molecular changes involved in these pathologies, we are committed to demonstrate that oligopeptidases and the neuropeptidergic system play a key role both in the neurodevelopmental process and in the progression of these disorders. Although animal model studies for schizophrenia (SCZ) and clinical studies with SCZ patients have helped to better understand changes in oligopeptidase activity, it has not been possible to study the molecular and/or cellular pathways that may in fact indicate the mechanism(s) determining these disorders. Therefore, we propose in this work a biochemical, cellular and molecular evaluation, using different models with alterations already observed in the SCZ, before and after treatments with conventional antipsychotics and/or using innovative interventions, aiming to obtain more information about the molecular mechanism(s) involved in the MDs, and that can aid in the diagnosis, the discovery of new targets and the development of new therapies.
