Extreme precipitation events represent the greatest source of risk associated with interannual variability in tropical climate regions and have been increasingly frequent and intense in modern times. In Brazil, about 74% of deaths related to natural disasters are associated with extreme rain events. In view of the recent hydroclimatic changes in South America, it is necessary to understand how the variability in climatic conditions interferes with the frequency and magnitude of these events. In this context, it is proposed in this research project the reconstitution of the frequency of extreme precipitation events based on high resolution geochemical records of trace elements in the speleothems of the Laje Branca grove (São Paulo State). The project aims to understand better how the frequency and magnitude of these events relate to climatic events of global expression. (AU)
