Chronic inflammation may be associated with the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, cancer and cardiovascular disease in young populations, often lasting until adulthood. Studies have shown that the diet is directly associated with chronic inflammation. The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) measures the inflammatory potential of the diet, having been validated for adult populations, but not for children and adolescents. The validation of tools that evaluate the inflammatory dietary patterns in young populations, through which it is possible to obtain valid and reliable results, is important in guiding strategies of prevention for the adult life. Objectives: To develop a DII for the pedriatric population utilising 24-hour food recall (R24h) and the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), and to validate this index and questionnaires using blood concentration biomarkers (Apolipoprotein A1, Apolipoprotein B and C-Reactive Protein) as the reference method. Methods: A validation study will be performed in a sample of 191 children and adolescents (3-17 years old) from São Paulo and Teresina. To measure the Dietary Inflammatory Index, a R24h will be answered 3 times (2 non-consecutive weekly days, 1 weekend day); and the FFQ will be answered twice with a 15 day interval. The reliability of the original DII will be tested using the FFQ. The agreement between the measurements will be calculated by determining the kappa coefficients for categorical variables and the Pearson correlation coefficients for the continuous variables. The DII validity will be determined using the method of triads between FFQ, R24h and pro-inflammatory biomarkers, as well as through the Pearson correlation coefficient (used for parametric variable), Spearman (used for non-parametric variable) and multilevel regression.
