Evaluation of contaminants from the use of hair dyes: analysis of paraphenylenediamine and derivatives in human urine

Abstract

The use of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals for personal care has always been wide explored by the population. There is now a greater tendency to seek excessive beauty by both women and men. The cosmetics industry offers a wide range of beauty products, among them hair products, such as dyes, anti-fall treatment, wire restoration, among others. The easy of access to the products and the indiscriminate use of them have attracted the attention of the inspection agencies and the scientific community, since a considerable number of studies are not observed, mainly evaluating chronic toxicological effects to exposed human beings. Such study becomes all the more important when one notices that a large part of the population, both nationally and internationally, make use of these substances constantly, often without proper care. Thus, the need to develop analytical methods that are increasingly accurate, sensitive and rapid is essential to determine these compounds in human urine, both professionals and users of these products, to assist in toxicological studies and other areas of interested in this subject. High performance liquid chromatography coupled with sequential mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has been the technique of choice for the detection and quantification of substances in different matrices.
