Influence of the race category on Brazilian family dynamics

Abstract

The growth in the number of interracial marriages in recent years in Brazil brings new challenges to family dynamics. Increasingly, it is necessary to orientate itself in different perspectives and references in order to understand the reproduction of behavioral patterns within this environment. Considering that the socialization process has particularities and one of them concerns the relationship between the practices of updating, perpetuating and legitimizing the ideology of racism and the resulting impact on Brazilian families, the main objective of this study is to verify the relationship between the family type, racism, rejection, and parental emotional support. Specific aims are to relate rejection and emotional support received from parents in childhood and racial identification; to verify the relationship between perception of discrimination and racial identification; compare the choice of visual stimuli (skin tone, eye color and hair shape) with racial identification; analyze the manifestations of racism in family dynamics (victims, aggressors and consequences). About 100 people of both sexes, recruited in social networks, will be invited to respond to a form in Google forms that will contain questions about sociodemographic data, self identification of phenotypic characteristics (skin tone, hair and eyes), two instruments, Daily Discrimination Scale and Scale of Memories on Parenting Practices, and essay questions about the apprehension of race and self-report of experiences of racism. Considering the gap in studies on socialization in interracial families, the following study is justified because it relates family dynamics and race relations. It is hypothesized that racial identification and phenotype are correlated with parental practices and experiences of racism.
