Effect of phototherapy with infrared light-emitting diode (led) on the strength capacity of cycling athletes

Photobiomodulation therapy is increasingly used in sports, since studies discuss its improvement for better sport performance and can be used by means of low intensity laser (LLL) devices and light emitting diodes (LEDs). Biochemical changes induced by the absorption of light by cytochrome C oxidase (Cox), are able to produce beneficial physiologic, which result in muscular performance increase in this athletes. However, few studies have evaluated the applications of a specific light spectrum in the performance of these individuals. Therefore, the present study seeks to evaluate the effects of the infrared LED on the strength abilities of cycling athletes. Objective: To analyze the acute effects of the application of LED phototherapy on the strength abilities of cycling athletes. Method: The study sample will be composed of 24 male cyclist athletes randomly allocated into two groups: Infrared LED Group (LED-I) and Sham Group (LED-S). The athletes will undergo an evaluation of the strength capacities of the quadriceps muscle, by means of isokinetic dynamometry. After 24 hours of the test, the LED (180 J) will be applied to the quadriceps femoris muscle. The same test will be performed 24 hours after LED application. For analysis of the data, normality test will be used to verify the distribution and adequate statistical tests for the appropriate intra and intergroup comparisons, being considered two factors in the comparisons, time and group. A significance level of 5% will be adopted.
