Catholic metropolis: experiences and exchanges between the archdioceses of São Paulo and Santiago in the National Eucharistic Congresses in the 1940s

Abstract

Observing the National Eucharistic Congresses as significant religious events that sought to demonstrate the strength and influence of the Roman Catholic Church in society, the research proposal intends to carry out the survey of primary sources and other documents about the 8th National Eucharistic Congress of Santiago, Archives of the Archbishopric of Santiago and conduct a research internship at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, thus proposing a theoretical and immersion in the Chilean and Latin American bibliography in the field of history and urban studies, from a Catholic religious perspective. The general objective of the research is to reflect on possible approaches and exchanges carried out by the archdioceses of São Paulo and Santiago before the 8th National Eucharistic Congress of Chile held in November 1941. In the face of the dialogues between the Catholic Church of the two countries, exchanges that helped in the attempt to build and consolidate the image of such cities as Catholic metropolis (whether in the territorial aspect or in the symbolic aspect) that occurred in the first half of the twentieth century.
