The public-private limits and the norms of urban space use: speech or practice

Abstract

With the global processes of urban space production, it is increasingly common to findhomogenous landscapes in different parts of the world, so urban solutions that aredeveloped for certain local circumstances are multiply in different and varied urban contexts, emptied of their social and geographical attributes. What approach these actions are your logics, mainly associated with capitalist dimensions that incorporate in their model of production a coalition of agents that includes the State and the private initiative. The terraces associated withcommercial establishments are a common element used as an incentive to use public space and consumption, linking these two instances in spatial typologies that are replicated in many cities. This study, specifically, deal with the terraces installed in Lyon,France and Seville, Spain. The analysis incorporates the norms and territorialization of these elements,associating them with local sociocultural aspects that guide the appropriation of these spaces - which is expressed and analyzed here through the development of specific field methodology and the exploration ofinstruments of graphic representation.
