The current research project intends to reach a descriptive scenario of liquid consonants (, , , e ) in Portuguese through a comparative analysis of three synchronies that have defined the language historical path: from Latin, passing by the ancient period, and getting to the present times. The corpus for this study is constituted by 250 medieval Galician-Portuguese songs, among which we find 100 religious cantigas, by Dom Afonso X, and 150 secular cantigas, 50 from each of the three canonical genres. The selected methodology is founded on the observation of the possibility or not of spelling variation in the representation of such consonants, as well as the occurrence of rhyme and the division of the verse in poetic syllables, in order to determine the weight of syllables containing liquid consonants. The data will be investigated according to a non-linear approach and to studies oriented by variation and change. Thus, it will be possible to develop a phonological characterization of the alterations observed in the liquid consonants in Brazilian Portuguese during the language constitution. (AU)
