Images of villages and towns of Brazil’s hinterland in the iconography and reports of the philosophical journey of Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira (1783-1792)

Abstract

The present work consists in the organization of the iconographic and documentary of the first scientific expedition achieved in the Brazilian hinterland, the Philosophical Journey of Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira (1783-1792). From this it aims to produce cartographies that gather such information, enabling the use of such material as a source for architectural, urbanistics and landscape studies of these places. Although object of countless studies, the vast documentary and iconographic material related to the urban nucleus of the expedition of Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira has not yet been analyzed in its material aspects, in its technical details and in their productive specificities. This distinct approach regarding the documentation of Ferreira's expedition allows new understandings on Architecture and Urbanism in relation to the Amazon and Central-West region of Brazil, enriching the History of Urbanization of inter-imperial frontier zones.
